      <image:title>News and Inspiration - Landscapes of Distinction Awards 2025 - A golden glow!</image:title>
<image:caption>Every great garden begins with a story — a vision, a dream, a conversation over coffee. At Botanic, we’re lucky enough to help turn those dreams into living, breathing landscapes. This year, that journey has been recognised with Gold awards for two residential gardens at the 2025 Landscapes of Distinction Awards, presented by Registered Master Landscapers. These awards honour the very best in New Zealand’s professional landscaping, but for us, they’re really about the people and places behind them. Both gardens started with listening — understanding how our clients wanted to live, entertain, and connect with their surroundings. From there, we wove together the exterior garden spaces, materials and plant palettes that not only fit with the architecture but also felt at home in the surrounding environment. We’re incredibly grateful to our clients for their trust, and to the contractors whose skill and dedication made these gardens possible. These awards may have our name on them, but they truly belong to everyone who brought these spaces to life. Here is an outline of the two awarded gardens. Do get in touch with Botanic if you would like help with your own landscape project!</image:caption>

      <image:title>News and Inspiration - Landscapes of Distinction Awards 2025 - Cashmere Garden</image:title>
<image:caption>Perched high on a sun-drenched hillside in Cashmere, Christchurch, this garden feels like a natural extension of its contemporary family home. Designed for a young family who love outdoor living, the landscape unfolds in a series of inviting spaces — sheltered courtyards, a terraced deck, and a luxurious swimming pool — each positioned to maximise comfort and frame sweeping views of the Port Hills. Below the home and pool, a lush lawn is embraced by soft, billowing plantings that sway gently in the breeze. A refined yet grounded material palette ties the garden seamlessly to the architecture while echoing the rugged beauty of its hillside setting. A bubbling water feature brings a sense of calm, while raised vegetable planters, tucked neatly into the slope near the kitchen, add practicality and charm. From the outset, seamless integration between house and garden was key. The decision to place the pool close to the home was made early with the clients and architect, and Paul refined the landscape to make it work beautifully. Terraced decking leads naturally down to the pool, and the fencing — set discreetly below pool level — preserves uninterrupted sightlines to the Port Hills while meeting all safety and building code requirements. The garden was expertly implemented by the fantastic team at Williams Elvidge.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News and Inspiration - Landscapes of Distinction Awards 2025 - Cashmere - materials</image:title>
<image:caption>Every material was chosen to work in harmony with the MADe Architects-designed home, reflecting its contemporary mix of brick, concrete, and timber. The concrete paving — in Allied Concrete’s ‘Haze’ and ‘Sea Breeze’ — was kept intentionally understated, echoing the home’s blue-grey brickwork and allowing the planting to take centre stage. Sections of the garden walls are clad in natural basalt stone sourced from the nearby Port Hills, adding rich texture and forging a subtle visual link to the surrounding landscape. Corten steel, with its warm, earthy patina, brings a striking contrast to the stone and concrete. It shapes crisp-edged planters, pond surrounds, retaining walls, and garden borders — adding both structure and a modern edge. For the timber decking, Thermory Ash was selected to match the house’s cladding, creating a seamless visual connection. Greywacke gravel rounds introduce additional texture and form a permeable, natural-looking path surface, while Stonelock binding ensures they remain firm underfoot. Two captivating kinetic wind sculptures, by artists Matthew Williams and Phil Price, bring movement and a touch of intrigue to this dynamic, family-friendly garden.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News and Inspiration - Landscapes of Distinction Awards 2025 - Cashmere - planting</image:title>
<image:caption>The planting design draws inspiration from the wild beauty of the nearby Port Hills, combining a naturalistic look with low-maintenance practicality. An evergreen “meadow” flows between the hardscaped areas, punctuated by sculptural foliage and seasonal bursts of colour. At its heart, Lomandra ‘Tanika’ forms a lush, resilient base layer. Within this matrix, bold foliage plants — Agave attenuata, Ligularia reniformis, and Beschorneria yuccoides — add architectural form. Seasonal colour comes from flowering species such as Dietes iridioides and Gaura ‘Sparkle White’, while compact shrubs like Westringia ‘Grey Box’ and Euphorbia wulfenii × characias provide year-round structure and texture. In the shaded areas near the house, the planting shifts to a different palette — Dianella nigra, Hypolepis ambigua, Arthropodium cirratum, Astelia fragrans, and Libertia grandiflora — creating a softer, more layered feel. To gently define the garden’s boundaries, evergreen hedges of Pittosporum ‘Stephens Island’ were planted for screening, while Muehlenbeckia complexa climbs steel mesh frames fixed to the fences, softening edges and adding a sense of enclosure.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News and Inspiration - Landscapes of Distinction Awards 2025 - Strowan Garden</image:title>
<image:caption>The brief for this garden renovation project was simple yet enticing: transform an established but dated garden into a luxurious, resort-style retreat — a space designed for relaxation, entertainment, and year-round enjoyment. While the previous garden was tired it had “good bones” — established trees and shrubs provided shelter and greenery, and the swimming pool was in place. However, the surrounding spaces felt dated, and the narrow paths restricted movement. The underplanting was sparse and needed fresh energy. The recent renovation of the character home by AW Architects, also guided the garden’s transformation. Working closely with the clients and architects, we prioritised enhancing the indoor-outdoor connection, linking the kitchen and dining spaces directly to a vibrant, complementary outdoor entertainment area.</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Inspiration - Landscapes of Distinction Awards 2025 - From outdated to outstanding</image:title>
<image:caption>At the heart of the new design is the ultimate entertaining hub: an outdoor kitchen, fireplace, and louvered pergola that seamlessly extend the living space outdoors. Beside the sparkling heated swimming pool, a second pergola forms a quiet nook for unwinding, while a poolside changing room with outdoor shower completes the resort experience. For family fun, a large artificial turf lawn, putting green, and basketball mini-court keep the space active and inviting in all seasons. The garden was expertly implemented by the talented team at OnLandscapes.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News and Inspiration - Landscapes of Distinction Awards 2025 - Strowan - materials</image:title>
<image:caption>A contemporary materials palette of ceramic tile paving and rendered concrete walls provides a sophisticated backdrop to the lush planting. The paving choice — outdoor porcelain tiles — was the most significant design decision, selected for their contemporary look, durability, and low maintenance. Garden walls, both existing and new, were cleaned, replastered where needed, and repainted in a crisp white, matching the fireplace and pergola metalwork to heighten the bright, airy resort aesthetic. While a light-coloured limestone cladding was considered for an even more luxurious look, budget priorities led to a simpler but equally striking finish.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The planting design captures the lush, subtropical character the clients desired, adapted to suit the local climate with cold-hardy species and select Mediterranean plants. Large-grade trees and fast-growing plants were chosen for instant impact. Around the pool and entertaining areas, cold-hardy palms — Butia capitata (Jelly Palm), Trachycarpus fortuneii (Windmill Palm), and Chamaerops humilis (Mediterranean Fan Palm) — create a holiday atmosphere. Large olive trees along the southern boundary provide privacy and a Mediterranean touch. Lower-level planting combines bold foliage with fine textures and vibrant bursts of colour. Highlights include Leucadendron varieties, Canna ‘Tropicana Gold’, Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’, Ligularia reniformis (Leopard Plant), Farfugium tussilaginea, and Cyperus papyrus (Papyrus). In the front garden, established camellias and rhododendrons were retained, complemented by a traditional, shade-tolerant palette including Pachysandra terminalis (Japanese Spurge), Lobelia angulata, Skimmia japonica, and Ligularia reniformis. The result is a lush, inviting garden that balances contemporary elegance with a relaxed resort vibe — a place where every day feels like a holiday.</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Inspiration - Rugged on Rēkohu - Botanic field trip 2024</image:title>
<image:caption>When Botanic was founded in 2022 we decided that each year we should undertake a ‘field trip’ to a natural landscape or area of botanical interest. Going together with family would help to recharge our batteries and also help us continue to learn about different plants and botanical communities. The trips are also a chance to tick off a few business related tasks that need doing. In 2023 for our field trip we took the TranzAlpine train up to Arthur’s Pass and had a poke around the Beech forests and subalpine areas there. This year we decided to go further afield and explore the Chatham Islands - somewhere none of us had been before.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The islands were named Rēkohu by Moriori and Wharekauri by Māori. There is a complex and sad history of conflict and exploitation on the islands but also an inspirational kaupapa of peace. The islands are now home to around 800 locals, and as visitors we felt the warmth of their hospitality, meeting many friendly folk who were happy to yarn and share stories. We stayed at Owenga on the east coast of Rēkohu which is a hub for the island fisheries. A trip highlight was the local kai moana - with koura / crayfish, blue cod and paua featuring on our dinner plates during the week. Our visit coincided with the annual pig hunting competition and community festival. Feeling the need to represent, the Botanic team joined in on the tug-of-war, gumboot throwing and (pig carrying) obstacle course… but placed well behind the impressive local talent!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Pastoral farming forms a large part of the Rēkohu landscape, but dotted around are several remaining natural landscape gems providing a refuge for native flora and fauna. There are many unique endemic plant species on Rēkohu, some of which are now commonly used garden plants in Aotearoa such as the Chatham Island Forget-me-not (Myosotidium hortensia). As plant nerds we were keen to see these plants in their wild habitat - several day trips to investigate ensued:</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Inspiration - Rugged on Rēkohu - Ohira Bay basalt columns</image:title>
<image:caption>Our first excursion was to the famed basalt columns in the northwest of the island and they did not disappoint! Formed from a lava flow during the Cretaceous period 80 million years ago the polygonal shapes occurred as the lava cooled. The stone was used by Moriori for tool making and the pentagonal shape has become one of the symbols of the Chathams. Tucked into the niches between the rocks is a diverse community of native plants which are adapted to the minimal soil and coastal exposure. Specific plants we observed included the native ice plant (Disphyma papillatum), Chatham Island spleenwort (Asplenium chathamense), sand daphne (Pimelia arenaria), and remuremu (Selliera radicans). The plant communities observed here were a great lesson that plants will grow in severe environments - provided you select the ones adapted to those conditions.</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Inspiration - Rugged on Rēkohu - Admiral Gardens</image:title>
<image:caption>After visiting the basalt columns we dropped into the nearby Admiral Gardens. Owners Lois and Val Croon have created a diverse and exciting garden from what was previously a bare farm paddock. The first priority was to create shelter. Using both exotics - macrocarpa and pine - and the native hakapiri (Olearia traversii), a buffer to the wind was created which then enabled the more detailed planting to flourish. The garden has a temperate climate with very little frost which allows for a subtropical mix of plants - both native and exotic. Plants of note that we spotted included the local ribbonwood (Plagianthus chathamicus), a subspecies of the mainland Plagianthus regius which has much larger leaves and lacks the divaricating growth form in its juvenile stage. The lack of juvenile divarication is also a feature of the local lancewood tree (Pseudopanax chathamicus) - perhaps due to the lack of browsing Moa in the long past. Several of the gardens namesake - the admiral butterfly - were spotted out and about enjoying the garden.</image:caption>

<image:caption>On a trip to the north of Rēkohu we dropped into look at the plant communities within the wetland at Manauea. The wetland is formed on undulating peat soils on the edge of Te Whanga Lagoon - the large inland water body on Rēkohu. A fire in 1994 burnt much of the plant communities there but it has since recovered well. The local restio, Chatham Island bamboo rush (Sporadanthus traversii) is the primary peat former and creates large domes within the wetland. The golden inflorescence of the Sporadanthus was a dramatic feature. Other key species within the patchwork of plants included harakeke (Phormium tenax ‘Chathams’), Dracophyllum scoparium, Oioi (Apodasmia similis), and bracken ferns. Other plants dotted through included taramea karupuru (Aciphylla traversii), hokotaka (Corokia macrocarpa), Chatham Island mingimingi (Leucopogon parviflorus) and pouteretere (Leptecophylla robusta). The contrasting textures, forms and colour created a visually exciting and cohesive landscape.</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Inspiration - Rugged on Rēkohu - Henga Scenic Reserve</image:title>
<image:caption>The initial walk is through gnarled kopi / karaka (Cornycarpus laviegatus) forest with a beautiful understory of lush kawakawa (Piper excelsum). The track then emerges into the open at a lookout with views over the western coastline down to a surprisingly tropical looking beach and outcrops of wind hewn limestone. The area is known as Henga Bluff and is sacred to both Moriori and Māori. At the lookout we found our longed for ‘wild’ Chatham Island Forget-me-nots looking luscious and leafy in the wind blown landscape. We suspect this patch at the lookout was planted rather than naturally occurring but we claimed it as a find. The plant communities on the dunes sloping down to the beach was fascinating. The open low shrubland was made up of scattered wind sculptured hokotaka (Corokia macrocarpa) set into a matrix of wiwi (Ficinia nodosa), tātaraheke (Coprosma acerosa), and sand daphne (Pimelia arenaria). The broad leaves and spiky flower stalks of Chatham Island flax (Phormium tenax ‘Chathams’) were dotted through as an emergent form. Towards the beach patches of Chatham Island Geranium (Geranium traversii) were growing strongly out of the sand. Lots of inspiration! From a design perspective both the Ocean Mail wetland and Henga Reserve coastline were a good reminder of how complex biodiverse landscapes often still have a cohesive visual appearance which is created by the regularity of the dominant species, their contrasting foliage and forms. Set within these more obvious species, the ‘finer grain’ less obvious plants find their subtle niches.</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Inspiration - Rugged on Rēkohu - Manukau Nursery, Owenga</image:title>
<image:caption>Just down the road from where we were staying in Owenga was Manukau Nursery. The nursery’s goal is to ‘bring back the birds’ on the adjacent coastal farm by propagating and planting 150,000 native trees between 2023 - 2026. Lucky for us we had already met Tiffany McClunie who works there and she offered to show us around. It was fascinating to see the range of plants being grown and the rare species being propagated. The revegetation project is being undertaken in two stages - an initial planting of primarily Chatham Island akeake (Olearia traversii) trees and Harakeke (Phormium tenax) is undertaken to establish a shelter crop, followed by a succession planting of more diverse species that benefit from the established shelter. We particularly enjoyed seeing the rare Chatham Island Button Daisy (Leptinella featherstonii) in propagation - a ‘mega-herb’ variety of Leptinella - which grows into a leafy shrub instead of the ground hugging species we commonly see in NZ gardens. Tiffany noted that L. featherstonii needed bird guano to do best. Its current wild distribution is essentially limited to smaller offshore islands inhabited by seabirds.</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Inspiration - Soaking up garden inspiration - NZ Gardens Trust Conference 2024</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s refreshing to step away from the drawing board now and then to seek new ideas and gain inspiration. Recently the Botanic team did exactly that, heading up to the Sauvignon Blanc clad valleys of Marlborough for the 2024 New Zealand Gardens Trust Conference. Joining over 120 gardeners, horticulturalists and designers, Adrian and I toured some fantastic and diverse gardens, chatted with like-minded colleagues, imbibed some of the local vino, and listened closely to knowledgeable speakers. The rain fell persistently while we were out looking at gardens but that did not dampen the spirits, and the local gardeners, farmers and growers were gratefully banking the moisture in the ground after several months of dry. From gardens visited to lessons gleaned from the speakers, here is a quick snapshot of the NZGT conference - the best of the best.</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Inspiration - Soaking up garden inspiration - Garden fusion</image:title>
<image:caption>The garden that generated the most excitement for both Adrian and I! Mortiaki - owned and gardened by Andrea and Pete Forrest - is a large suburban garden on the fringe of Blenheim. Starting out over 20 years ago, Andrea and Pete engaged Japanese garden designer Hiro Yoshida to help create a slice of Japan in Blenheim using only NZ native plants. The resulting garden is a lush, green and peaceful oasis. The Japanese style is clear in the structure, shapes and details within the garden. A meandering stream flows from boulders (metaphorical mountains) through to a large pond which is criss-crossed by a simple timber plank bridge. Curving gravel paths bleed into a larger ‘sea’ of raked gravel which is softened beautifully by massed native ground covers including Leptinella, Pimelia and Coprosma. Native trees including Carpodetus serratus (putaputaweta, marbleleaf), Kunzea ericoides (kānuka), Sophora spp. (kōwhai) are limbed up creating a canopy above and space below for native shrubs, ferns and more groundcovers.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Winterhome is a large rural garden on the Kēkerengū coast north of Kaikoura. Established in 1939 by the Macfarlane family and then significantly developed from the 1980’s onwards, the garden is structured around a series of formal axes and a sequence of open and enclosed spaces. Clipped hedging and topiary are contrasted and softened by drifts of native shrubs, ground covers and flowering perennials. Roses, ponds, swing bridges, sculpture, avocado groves and citrus plantings are revealed as you explore the gardens. A magical place, we loved the use of Piper excelsum (kawakawa) as clipped hedging and the lush feel of the place despite the coastal setting. Winterhome has been assessed as a 5 star garden by the NZ Gardens Trust https://www.winterhome.co.nz/</image:caption>

<image:caption>A fascinating side trip to our tour was a visit to Puro New Zealand’s main hub of operation - growing and processing organic medicinal cannabis in Kēkerengū for export worldwide. Set up by the Macfarlane family (of Winterhome), Puro has been busy working away over the last few years developing their business and are continually researching new and better ways to make the most of this exciting new horiticultural industry for Marlborough and for New Zealand. It’s good to see this botanical wonder plant becoming more readily available for medicinal use - and it looks great too! https://puro.co.nz/</image:caption>

      <image:title>News and Inspiration - Soaking up garden inspiration - A coastal haven</image:title>
<image:caption>Established over 20 years ago by Rosa Davison and husband Michael, Paripuma is another coastal garden on a grand scale. Starting out with a barren and windswept paddock right at the beachfront, a framework of native trees - in particular Myoporum laetum (ngaio) - were established to create shelter and set up a bold formal vista from the house through the garden to the sea. With the shelter in place, Rosa and Michael have been developing more intimate gardens including a beautiful garden of ornamental grasses and flowering perennials to attract butterflies and other wildflife. Asclepias spp. (swan plants) are used in swathes combined with drifts of perennials including asters, sedums, heleniums, verbena and grasses including Stipa gigantea and Calamagrostis x acutifolia ‘Karl Foerster’. We caught this part of the garden at the end of the flowering season but still enjoyed the forms and autumnal tones evident. The very large and healthy looking native climber Tecomanthe speciosa (akapukaea, Three Kings vine) was another highlight, growing vigorously up at the house. Paripuma has been assessed as a 5 star garden by the NZ Gardens Trust. https://paripuma.com/index.html</image:caption>

<image:caption>A quick dash around Eliza’s Garden at dusk in Grovetown, Blenheim was another highlight. Designed, owned and gardened by brother and sister team Wendy and Ross Palmer, Eliza’s has an exuberant and highly diverse planting scheme mixing natives and exotics, succulents, perennials, grasses and bulbs. The combinations were superb. A meandering walk through a shady woodland area opens up to a large lawn and sunny perennial and grass border with views across to the adjacent vineyard. Ross has an obvious talent in hunting down rare and hard to find plant species - the garden is a real treasure trove to be explored. We will be back. Eliza’s has been assessed as a 5 star garden by the NZ Gardens Trust. https://elizasgardencottage.nz/gallery/ PS. Just a few hundred metres away is sister garden Welton House. We unfortunately didn’t get a chance to take a good look - but this garden is also most definitely a must see as well. Next time! https://www.weltonhouse.co.nz/</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Inspiration - Soaking up garden inspiration</image:title>
<image:caption>The conference featured several speakers on topics ranging from food security through to growing NZ’s best pine nuts. However, the speakers that grabbed our attention the most both spoke to the topic of creating climate resilient gardens. With increasing temperatures and drought becoming more common, this gardening approach is both a sustainable way forward and it can look amazing! Jo Wakelin has been creating her Lake Dunstan garden near Cromwell since 2005 and has curated a fantastic collection of dry tolerant plant species - both native and exotic that thrive without supplementary water. Jenny Cooper has been developing her ‘Blue House’ garden in Amberley for the last 11 years and through trial and error has come to grips with the plants that suit the baking hot summers and fierce winds without needing to roll out the hose. Both speakers had common themes, including: working with the soil that exists on site, not improving the soil, rather choosing the right plants to suit it. selecting plants - native and exotic - that naturally grow in a similar climate zone to their gardens. combining plants of this type works well with a naturalistic style - the aesthetic created is very appealing and feels ‘right’ for the place. The importance of thick mulches (gravel / woodchip) to surpress weeds and keep moisture in the soil. There is so much more for Botanic to learn and explore on this topic and we are keen to utilise this approach in our own gardens and design work for clients. Find out more about Jo and Jenny’s gardens here: https://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/home-property/nz-gardener/76020864/garden-of-the-week-the-central-otago-plot-that-thrives-on-drought https://www.bluehouseamberley.nz/ https://www.studiohome.co.nz/studio-home-blog/climate-resilient-gardens Photo credit: Jenny Cooper - Blue House Garden</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Inspiration - Botanic Gin Project - Building on Adrian’s interest in crafting conceptual gin and our knowledge of Ōtautahi Christchurch’s new post-earthquake urban plantings, we made the Botanic launch party a live gin crafting event. Those attending could assist with crafting a gin from freshly foraged botanicals growing in the public urban spaces near the Botanic studio. Like designing a planting composition, crafting a gin uses the flavour and fragrant properties of each plant to design an overall composition.</image:title>
<image:caption>We are literally creating the taste of our urban landscape! From the resounding success of the launch party, the idea has evolved and now become an annual event. When the chosen flowers were in bloom, early November 2023, we hosted a group of 22 people to forage the urban botanicals and then all co-craft the gin together. Everyone was guided through the full process, took home their own sample and additional bottles are given to our clients and collaborators as appreciation gifts. Our ongoing gin and planting explorations has enabled new ways for people to experience the urban environment. The project captures many aspects of Botanics values and identity: innovative planting design, knowledge sharing, creating community, being appreciative and having fun. The idea is simple, yet far reaching and delicious!</image:caption>

As we are told by all that have tried it, and we reckon it’s pretty decent too. Nose: Sweet and floral with citrus undertones. Palette: A spicy and piny freshness leads to a citrus earthiness which finishes brightly with bright floral notes that linger long with a sweetness and peppery hint.</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Inspiration - Botanic Gin Project - “I’ve never smelt cabbage tree flowers before”</image:title>
<image:caption>An inspiring moment was seeing a whole group of people smelling a tī kōuka/cabbage tree flower for the first time and saying, “I never realised they smell so sweet”. The discovery of the fragrance of tī kōuka lead to it becoming the feature botanical accent in the gin. Along the journey there have been many other botanical discoveries: The flavour differences between kānuka (lighter) and mānuka (stronger) New growth has less flavour than the older, more resinous leaves (tōtara, tarata) Plants growing in the sun have more flavour than in shade (horopito and lavender) Small, subtle flowers can be highly aromatic (tauhinu and kaiwhiria) The different timing of tī kōuka flowering due to local climatic conditions As self-proclaimed plant nerds, learning about new plant properties has been a real joy.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News and Inspiration - Botanic Gin Project - Growing a community</image:title>
<image:caption>Over the past decade, the crafted botanical gin scene has grown exponentially. Our gin project gives the opportunity for people to learn about how to craft gin, a range of plant properties and their local urban landscape. In a world saturated with digital information, it provides a hands-on, practical experience which can be taken away and shared. Following the launch event, three people were inspired to get their own gin still. With society still reconnecting from covid related lockdowns and working from home, a key aspect of the project was bringing people together. The events have invited local architects, designers, engineers, developers, educators, clients and fellow landscape architects. Growing a community around us is important for both professional and social nutrition. We do wonder at times if we’re essentially creating a gin cult!</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Inspiration - Botanic Gin Project - A key aspect of the gin foraging walks was to guide people through Ōtautahi Christchurch’s new urban landscapes. The post-earthquake rebuild has seen the landscape architecture profession create a variety of new urban spaces. They have been designed to tell stories, be people friendly and create ecological habitat through biodiverse plantings.</image:title>
<image:caption>While foraging along the Te Ara Pū Hā South Frame Greenway (designed by Jasmax and Landlab), participants learned about the cultural plant uses depicted on signs by Matapopore; the origin of each plants indigenous ecosystem as developed by Di Lucas; crushed, smelt and tasted the botanicals; and heard design insights about the new spaces. Once distilled, the foraged urban plantings could then be smelt and tasted as a gin, something never done before. The gin project is not only an expression of Ōtautahi Christchurch’s ‘Sense of Place’, but has become a catalyst for people to directly engage with it, sometimes for the first time. A common remark along the walks has been “I never knew these spaces existed!”</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Inspiration - Botanic Gin Project - Enough 50ml sample bottles were made to continue sharing them with our clients, collaborators and design community as appreciation gifts. When visiting architects studios, our main source of projects, we often spot our Botanic gin bottles on their desks, like a keepsake, some still unopened! In some ways, it’s our alternative to a business card.</image:title>
<image:caption>When hosting in our studio, we have samples from the different flavour profiles expressed during the distillation process - sweet and fragrant (the heads), well balanced (the middle) and woody (the tails). We can only forage when the flowers are in bloom in early November, but the experience can be shared all year round. The gin projects influence can be measured by the compliments received from those involved and the curiosity and excitement of those first hearing about it. Some invitees have invited others and we keep track of any gin lovers we meet who are interested in coming along. We currently have a client who is keen to establish a gin botanical foraging garden. When they are ready, we plan to craft a gin based on the designed planting palette, which they will be served and tasted when presenting the design report. They will literally be ‘tasting their garden’. If this sounds like a bit of you, get in touch!</image:caption>

<image:title>News and Inspiration - Botanic Gin Project - When foraging we only take what is needed. The quantities of the fresh botanicals range from 0.1 gram to 4 grams per batch. We make 3 consecutive batches per year, so the overall impact we deem is negligible and sustainable. This project demonstrates how the ecosystem services have been innovatively used and are enhancing the value of the mahinga kai and natural resources.</image:title>
<image:caption>Botanic are also committed to minimising our carbon footprint by harnessing the local. Although this project doesn’t have built outcomes in the landscape, it still exemplifies our responsibility as stewards of the environment: Fresh botanicals were locally sourced by walking The base spirit was made in a local suburb The water used was collected from a local artesian well with recycled bottles Events used washable glassware, recycled paper napkins and served locally made plant based food Any green waste was composted locally Empty sample bottles could be returned and refilled The gin project promotes food resilience through local foraging, especially in urban spaces with high population density. During the walks, we point out kai species and safe areas away from exhaust fumes which can be harvested sustainably - many people didn’t realise this was possible or that you were allowed to.</image:caption>
