Christchurch Boys’ High School
A landscape design that connects heritage and new buildings through courtyards, entry spaces, and paths, creating a cohesive and legible school campus.
As part of the Christchurch Boys’ High School redevelopment the landscape design ties the old and new parts of the campus seamlessly together. A series of new courtyards, entry spaces, and pathways connect the restored heritage Main Block with new buildings, creating a cohesive and easy-to-navigate school environment.
At the heart of the campus is a central quadrangle used for ceremonies, performance, informal gatherings, and outdoor learning, while other outdoor spaces provide places for students to relax and socialise between classes. The landscape design uses robust materials and plantings suited to a busy school setting, with native and riparian planting linking the campus to the Ōtākaro - Avon River.
Cultural narratives are embedded in the outdoor spaces, helping strengthen the school’s identity and sense of place, alongside improved street frontage and circulation routes that enhance accessibility.
