Gardiners Waterway Enhancement
A stream restoration project focused on improving ecological health, habitat diversity and landscape amenity in an urban waterway.
The project reshapes Gardiners Waterway into a narrower, meandering baseflow channel that more closely reflects natural river processes, while creating new low-gradient riparian terraces planted with a diverse range of native species. Existing gravel-armoured banks are replaced with improved soil profiles to support healthy vegetation establishment, and in-stream habitat features such as logs, boulders and stumps are introduced to provide refuge and complexity for aquatic life.
Existing native planting is retained and enriched, with additional sedges, shrubs and trees carefully positioned to increase biodiversity and provide shade while maintaining open views to the water for neighbouring residents and park users. The result is a more resilient, attractive and ecologically functional waterway corridor that enhances both habitat and community enjoyment.
