Te Raekura Redcliffs School

A bold educational campus that weaves play throughout the site, reflecting the local ecosystem and sense of place.

At Te Raekura Redcliffs School, opportunities for playful exploration are embedded across the campus — within the buildings, level changes, and surrounding landscape — encouraging users to discover and engage through imagination.

A net suspended around a tōtara tree creates a dynamic outdoor space for tamariki to relax beside the school library, while an undercroft beneath the net and deck offers a playful run-through and hideaway. Play cubbies, climbing ropes, ramps, slides, chunky bleachers, and fireman’s poles provide multiple ways to move through and explore.

The design reflects the area’s rich natural and cultural context. Local coastal ecosystem planting, combined with productive edible gardens, creates a green, welcoming environment that connects the school to its community.
